Review: The Grasshopper Portable Vaporizer
Share

Hey y’all, it’s your boy VapeLife giving you another awesome review of some of the best vaporizers in world right now. Today, we’re gonna take a look at the Grasshopper Portable Vaporizer. You may have heard of it. This is exactly what VapeLifers have been asking for. For about 4 years, ever since we started reviewing vaporizers, I’ve been asked to review a vaporizer that vaporizes dry herbs, but with a super small and super discrete design. This pen ACTUALLY does vaporize dry herbs. There hasn’t been any portable vaporizers with such a design in recent years. Although there have been pens that would vape essential oil, wax, bho & rosin, that kind of thing. But now, we have the Grasshopper Portable Vaporizer for marijuana. Or any dry herb. This is what you’ve been waiting for. Boom!
So, What is the Grasshopper Vaporizer?
The Grasshopper Vaporizer is a dry herb vaporizer that actually CAN fit into your pockets. People would never be able to tell it’s a vaporizer. It looks like a pen and the Grasshopper fits wherever a pen would. You can just pull it out of your small pockets, put it on the table, and nobody would even know. And, we all like that kind of discretion.
In the past few months, I have been taking a break from the marijuana, mary jane, or cannabis if-you-will. The first few weeks were tough, but after that, everything went very smooth. Right now, I’m back on the VapeLife, and I’ll tell you straight up, this is the first vaporizer I’m vaping with after my ‘no more weed’ commitment.
This vaporizer works perfectly. But, it gets HOTTT. I like to use it, personally, with the Nexus Puck. I have a small puck, and I just put the Grasshopper on the male stem part of the puck, and just rip that ting. Yes, I said ting. Because, with this portable vaporizer, the heat elements are so close to the mouth piece that if you hit it to the mouth, the Grasshopper is going to be a little warm. No, a LOT warm. So, I like the diffusion and coolness with the water. You need to use the Grasshopper with a glass piece at this juncture. It will be so hot, that the Grasshopper will be hard to touch when the session ends.
First, let me talk to you about the physical components, starting with the size of the vaporizer. If we compare this vaporizer with a pen, you can actually see that it IS as small as a pen. If, only millimeters bigger. Millimeters!
The Grasshopper is a very simple vaporizer. I can’t express that enough. It is extremely well thought out, though. It is only composed of the battery portion, on/off switch and the heat chamber. On the front, it has a silicon piece that you can use to create a suction when you are using it with a glass bong or a glass piece. The chamber is very simple. Middle portion is the battery compartment. It comes with a magnetic charger that is just super cool, with a slick fit around the ‘push’ part of the pen. 2 batteries, so you can’t go wrong. One downside though, is that the battery only last for 1-3 hits ( hit = session ). But, most of the time, that is more than enough.
The Grasshopper vaporizer comes in Titanium and Stainless Steel. Hopper Labs also has different colors. I’d recommend the Stainless Steel because it does hold heat a little better as I have learned from buying camping equipment. Titanium usually cools down very quickly. But if you like to keep your vaporizer cooled, then maybe go with the Titanium one. At the top of the vaporizer you’ll find the temperature dial. It has 5 temperature settings. Somewhere between 3 and 4 is my sweet spot. The heat dial is sensitive.
Now, Let’s load this baby!
Opening the Grasshopper is very easy. Just remove the cap of the chamber. Then, you take your finely ground herbs, and you fit it in without stuffing it in tight. Push it in, and as soon as you feel a little pressure, stop pushing the herbs. Do not push it until it is tight, push it in until it is full! Next, take the cap, and just gently screw it on. Everything is designed very well, and easy to open and close. Machining seems top notch.
To turn it on, you’ll have to click the on/off button at the top opposite of the mouthpiece. Once it is on, the light indicator turns red and then turns blue when it is ready. Usually, after a couple of seconds (about 4- 5 seconds ). Once blue, you’re ready to go! But as you know, with dry herbs, the warmer the herbs get, the stronger the hits get. So your first hit might not be that strong at first, but your second will be more robust, and so on. The Grasshopper also has an automatic battery saver feature that puts your device in save mode if you’re not using it. To turn it on again, you’ll have to turn it off first, and then turn it on again.
This vaporizer is an extraordinary piece of vape electronics. Very convenient, and not very expensive. One of our favorites at the The VapeLife Store. It is the best? Mmmm…not sure, that is up to you…but it is an impressive vaporizer for right now. It does give great vapor, it’s ready to go right away, and it’s the smallest weed vaporizer I have ever seen. The Grasshopper is definitely a beast.
They’ve had mine in warranty repair for well over a year. The messages on their site said they shipped it in April although they never notified me. Besides that I did not receive it nor do they respond to my queries. Stay away.
Mine has been in warranty for over 2 years now and I just received notice of a 4 month extension. No info had been given for almost a year before I started emailing them again. They will take your money and never make good on your purchase when it fails within a couple days or weeks.
I purchased a Grasshopper vape and used it intermittently for about 6 months and it stopped charging. I contacted them on May 18 and was told it was a battery issue, so I purchased two new batteries for $14 from them. On May 21 they told me “After reviewing your request we will need you to send your unit in for service. Please see messages for shipping address and additional instructions”. I shipped it back and it was received by them on June 1, 2018. As of today, October 5, 2018 I have not received it back. If I ask about it I am told 10-20 days and again more than a month goes by with no response and no vape. I had previously purchased the Pax2 for me, the Pax3 for my wife and we both have the Pax ERA for travel. We both had charging issues with the 2 & 3 and Pax was fantastic and replaced both within a week. And my Pax2 was over 3 years old. Hopper Labs need to learn what service means. At this point I don’t want it back, I want a refund, but they do not respond to those requests. I am sick of contacting them and want everyone to know DO NOT BUY a GRASSHOPPER. If it stops working you are screwed.
I agree with alot of what you say however you have to remember that the hopper’s are the ONLY truly Pen sized And the Only true Pen Vape. As well as one of the only true effective convection made. Aside from Maybe the never Cloud vape thats much bigger – expensive ( at least – double the current price of the hoppers after discounted prices where dropped in order to keep offering the quality upgrades & better reliability and service. Since they had to switch supplier’s which is likely why you had such a long wait. My father who also owns 2 hopper’s had the same issue. Then suddenly i+ showed. P.S. Due to the service request backlogs that built up over those 2 months Only those who shipped in devices for repair b4 the 2 month delay got their devices back asap in the order they where sent in from longest send in date to most recent So people who sent they’re device in once the production resumed should expect a 1 to 2 month wait time Maximum though now that they have the parts for repairs and are catching up with the backlog every day. (They also hired more employees) So this as well as standard New orders will come much faster
Just keep in mind the hopper is one of a kind. Nothing else has the same size with anything close to the Same Power this device was designed to handle. No other vapes like this have a convection oven or even a decent convection oven. Unless you I Pay 2x the$ for a much larger portable vape i.e. the Mighty or Crafty which use both convection & conduction so it can’t be used for separate hits like the Hopper Or Ghost- the firefly 1 o 2 can do this too but it’s very badly designed & over overp.riced. it doesn’t give the thick strong clouds the hopper or even that the Mighty does. so I don’t really reccomend it. the design is garbage & i t’s only truly good with concentrates which the Mighty isn’t though I don’t know why as it is my current go to for herb Till I get my hopper(s) fixed. So keep in mind with non- selfstarter products You get much better or faster service. firefly.com or fireflyVape.com but crap product preformance while nothing is like the hoppers when they work
Brandon, I agree with you that this is the best pen size vape, which is why I bought it. I’m not saying it’s garbage or crap. I liked the way it worked, like it enough that when they first told me it needed a new battery I bought two extra batteries for it. And it is a quality unit. My problem is not with the unit, it’s with their service and communication.
May 21 “Please return your Grasshopper to Hopper Labs for service”
June 1 “Your unit has arrived and is in the service department queue”
July 4 “Your Hopper is still in line for replacement parts, and due to the issue with your Hopper, you are still looking at another month or so for replacement parts.”
Sept 11 “Your device is currently in line for a new chamber assembly which should happen within the next 10-20 days.”
It’s now Oct 8 and I have nothing back nor heard anything. Working great is ok, but if there is a warranty issue and I send it back I expect it back in a reasonable amount of time. It’s now 4.5 months! So meanwhile I bought a Pax so I had something to use. The Pax worked great and is easier to clean, and the new Pax ERA is smaller than the Grasshopper. I had a charging issue with the Pax 2, contacted them and had a replacement back in a week, with lots of good communication. I don’t care how good it works when it works if they cannot fix it when it doesn’t. And I read lots of reviews and hear the same complaint from many other users. As far as I am concerned I threw away the $ on the Grasshopper. I should have read the reviews prior to purchasing. My mistake, live and learn. If I ever get it back I will sell it on eBay and try to recoup some of my money.
ye i totally agree. If they simply responded and let me know how long it would take and if its an estimate or an exact date etc. but they basically lie. When they know its going to take longer. like that think it’ll help keep customers. when it does the exact opposite. Anyone with a decent brain would want to know an exact time and get an honest answer. It goes a long way, I run my own bussines and the first thing I made a bussines modo was complete honestly even when it may disappoint my clients. Because for people like me. I hate getting a date. Getting ready for it to be there that day and only realizing it wasn’t coming the day they said, its a real problem.. next time
Agree. And I am a business owner also. I do the same thing.
Your right. Is their cust serv. I havent bothered to send mine in since my fathers has been there months now and just like you said they say nothing. Pax stinks though. The hopper was the only vape that left no smell
If the GH keeps failing, then it isn’t really high quality, is it? And even if it is of superior quality, that’s no excuse for terrible customer service.
I agree on hundred percent and I know as i have tow in for service at the minute and one was sent in March 19 and it is now Aug 19. Will never buy or recommend it to anyone even though is one the best vape ive owned (when it works)
Bought it end of september, stopped working a month later. While it was working it was admitesdly great!
Sent it back. They received it november 17th, 2017. Still waiting to get it back.
Worst customer service. Rude, irritating. Lying again and again and even almost threatened me. I wish i had never bought it!
I purchased mine in Oct and within a week it started acting up, then for whatever reason it started working again, when it worked it was great. In Jan the battery died (so I thought), I was a little surprised that it was such a short life, I ordered another it arrived and didn’t work. I made brief contact enough for them to tell me they don’t warranty batteries but they would make an exception seeing as though it was new, they had me ship them them vape and battery for repair, that was the last I saw of it now they won’t even ackowledge receipt of mu requests.
I ordered the multi-battery charger(which they don’t offer any more) about a year ago, never got it.Requested charger cable warranty replacement, was fed a story about a fire and China’s fault.”Be patient”.The device itself is good, but the company is not.I wish they would get their shit together.Myself and so many others will keep on bad-mouthing this company until they do the right.
I loved mine for about the first dozen or so times I used it. Then it failed. And kept failing. So I did a bit of research into the “red and blue lights of death” as they’ve become known, and apparently it’s not just me. One reseller told me they were stopping selling them because the failure rate was around 40%
They say they will honour their warranty, but that means sending a used vape back, through customs, from outside of the States. I’m not happy with doing that. Would you be?
Sorry. Great concept and aesthetic design, but totally flaky and unreliable in practice. I’d recommend looking elsewhere.
This company is so jacked up its unreal. I ordered one as a gift in early December as a present the ship date said December 23rd so I told the person their present may be a little late. Early January I emailed them to let me know why the hold up and the customer service was very short and almost seemed irritated that i even asked about the ship date. Trying to be nice at that point when I was extremely irritated I told them that I was mostly frustrated because it was a gift and that I received no heads up about the delay. They again emailed me again doing nothing but, “Assuring its Quality” and that its worth the wait and again leaving a short smart remark back which again did not include any information that I wanted about my order. I left it alone and waited again patiently for an order I should have already received. It is now January 24th. Still no Grasshopper still no information and they sent me an advertisement two days ago too purchase a Grasshopper. I was so furious because I honestly even forgot about the order since it is a gift. I rechecked my order information go figure the order is still In Progress and has not shipped I emailed them that day upon this realization and have yet to receive a reply. The hassle of getting this product is not worth the quality of it. I would never recommend this company to anyone and if you are thinking of getting one save yourself the trouble and buy a PAX or something along those lines.
And if you do get it, you will probably have to return it soon after for warranty work. Mine failed 3 times in 10 months. Sent it in the third time in April 2018 and still have not heard a thing about it.
I am interested but my series 7 has been so good and after over a year the first replacement was very quick easy and free. Also the built in battery can serve for days and up to 440…it is pretty high but as a stoner I end up there soon.
Serious 7 is cra compared to the hopper I own both. The hopper is meant to act as a replacement for a bowl. So smokers who want to switch to vaping get a very similar experience rather than the weak and wispy coulds of vapor alot of portables give you
6 months? Dang, I very only been waiting 2 months.I need it Now 🙁
So if there telling me a November delivery date I………shouldn’t hold my breath?
One would think you could whip these out. If you hire more help you sell more product……..No?
Hey Mark ??did your Grasshopper come yet??
Hi I bought a Grasshopper straight from the manufacturers Grasshopper Labs and I’ve been waiting now over 6 months is this normal can anybody tell me if they have bought one and received one and what time it took? I am becoming quite worried now and starting to believe I made the wrong choice .m.ains
They will get them out as soon as they can. They are doing great. Good company trying their best. VL
He’s right. They’re doing the best they can. This device is ahead of its time and the creators are overseeing everything, the manufacturing warranty requests everything. So the time spend waiting and sending it in is worth it. I stuck it out and it’s my favorite and most used vape. I’m sure most of you who held onto their hoppers know this already-
Mine failed 3 times in 10 months. Sent it in the third time in April 2018 and still have not heard a thing about it. A great majority of people have had the same experience. Completely unreliable! BUYERS BEWARE!
Hey asshole, why don’t you use it for more than a day and post a real review instead of using it once then raving about how great it is.
Tired of these pathetic losers who think they know how to review a vape.
FUCK YOU
I’ve had 2 for almost a year and my father owns 2 as well moron. Clearly your the one who doesn’t know a good vape
nothing to say? ye that’s right. don’t assume. It’s hit or miss with the early hoppers and its still not perfected but the hopper is the only device with all that power and hardware packed into that size. Their device is on the bleeding edge of vape design. Making it is insanely hard and wasn’t even possible till recently thanks to 3-D printers. If you don’t want to deal with the development issues get a Mighty. OR. if you want the same capabilities as the hopper or a device that claims so go for the Firefly or or FF 2. Horrible design light almost non existent clouds constant combustion if not packed super carefully. and overall a simple bad design unlike the hopper which thoroughly heats up your air and doesn’t require a technique because the design didn’t bother including a heating pathway forcing a quick pass over the element to do the work requiring perfect hits that only pull very slightly in order to let the air heat up long enough. and even this doesn’t give you a good cloud. just closes to a good one. If you like tedious pulls and vapor that is so light you can’t see it and have to set the device to max to get effect from it. since you really seem to hate the hopper get that, its reliable so as long as you don’t mind the bad vapor output its perfect for you. Or for a real vape that works like the hopper and also works for oil and wax and has 0 literally 0 draw resistance get the ghost. its double the price of a hopper but only about 100-ish more than a Pax 3 or FF 2. I plan to get one myself but right now i’m happy with my hoppers and my mighty but the Ghost lets you take single hits vs. sessions like the mighty which cant do singles because of its small amount of conduction to get a quicker vape start. FUN FACT. the hoppers heater is stronger than the might which is 36 watts. the hopper is 40 or 45? i need to double check but its 40 or more for certain. that means a 4 mm 1 cm wide heater destroys the 4 inch tall by 3/4th inch wide convection heater in the Mighty or Crafty( the smaller version with half the battery life. due to its lack of a 2nd battery the mighty has
Yada, yada, yada! With all that said, it’s useless if doesn’t work! I’ve had my hopper for 14 months now, and for 9 of them Grasshopper has it for repairs. They’ve had it for 7 months this last time I sent it in and still no word!
That sucks. I’m sorry you’ve had such bad luck/ ill update this and let you know how my hoppers hold up now that they’ve gotten some of their shit together and have been working on enlarging their factory and employees to get more output so we’ll see what happens
The Hopper works great! When it works. I sure hope they can make it more reliable.
me too. they’re trying so cross your fingers as long as they’re still alive it. They should work it out
however it definitely wasn’t a mistake. it might be annoying now but you payed less for your hopper than you’d have payed for an equal household vape. As far as I know no portables compare(when it works) so Even if id doesn’t work though they’ve been expanding so they’re doing something right and that way they will be around and eventually smooth all this BS out. And at that point for 250-ish I bet you’d be pretty happy. There’s a good reason they priced it so low even though they could sell a device like that for more than 2 times that as its beats an vape out there aside from some pricey household vapes when it works. They could easily have charged the price of the firefly which hardly makes vapor. They knew it would likely have issues and needed to price it reasonably for that fact. if they charged what i’d be worth if it worked like the mighty or crafty would have turned people off instantly. They needed to make the clear potential worth the wait and the money put toward it. The lack of shipping labels if bullshit though. I heard they started giving them out, but you have to complain lol When I send mine in finally Bitching them out and getting a label. I overlooked it when they had just started out but now its time they catch up and give us loyal customers that could have left years ago some compensation they really need to work on their cust. serv.
Best,
Brandon
So, they’re trying their “best”?? That say it all.
